How Reverse Osmosis Works

Reverse osmosis is a point-of-use system, usually installed in the cabinet under your kitchen sink and connected to a dedicated drinking water faucet.

Water first passes through sediment and carbon pre-filters, then through a semi-permeable membrane that separates out a wide range of dissolved material. The treated water collects in a small storage tank so it is ready when you turn the faucet on.

Many systems also include a final polishing filter before the faucet. The refrigerator or ice maker can often be connected to the same system so ice and cold water taste the same as the tap.
